Stylist Talk | Things you don't say at a family holiday dinner...

Lets talk body image today ladies and gentleman.  The Christmas holiday has come and gone, now on the New Years Eve & New Years Resolutions.  Its no secret that I have been on a wholeness journey both physically, emotionally and spiritually over the last 1-2 years.  My journey started with addressing things from my childhood that have always laid dormant in the back of my mind and was never discussed.  With going through counseling, stress therapy, acupuncture, seeing a Nutritionist I have transformed into a new woman.  There are things that are still a work in progress (like my anxiety) but look out 2020!

Now lets talk about the always dreadful holiday family dinner conversations.  Typically for me its always the "When are you going to get married and/or have children" conversation.  Or "Girl, you not getting any younger, what's the hold up"?  OR "You can't work all the time"  (Well are any of y'all paying my bills?)
Well yesterday for Christmas dinner, as soon as I walked in the house it was "OMG, are you getting smaller from the last time I saw you"?,  Or, "where is your butt & hips"?  It was awkward for me at first because I know I have lost weight, but I am still overweight for my ideal body size.  At my highest weight as of 2018 I ranged between 222-225 pounds, which I was very uncomfortable and had a very busy work schedule of traveling 3-4 days a week.  I didn't eat the healthiest because I was on the road, it comes with the territory of being a traveling manager at times.
Here at 220 in 2016, and not healthy but pleasantly plump...those boyfriend jeans were a size 16W!

I think what I realized yesterday is that especially in the African American community its almost expected to have curves,  When in all actuality I've never had curves, I was just thick/fat, without a butt or hips.  I am a true Apple Shape body type.
The popular phrase is BBW:  "Big Beautiful Woman" is a euphemism for an overweight woman. The terms "Big Beautiful Women" and "BBW" were coined by Carole Shaw in 1979, when she launched BBW Magazine, a fashion and lifestyle magazine for "plus-size" women. Wikipedia

For me and my bodytype, I was a BBW just without the hips and butt, however my former size camouflaged that, I was mostly just "thick".  My classic style has always been blouses and wide leg slacks which also hid the fact that I was an apple shape.  I do understand how to dress for my body and for me that has always been the key. I have never been a woman that wears anything skin tight unless I am around the house or putting on some leggings to run errands, but its always with an over sized menswear top or sweatshirt. Just my style.

2017/2018: starting to lean out with proper diet,  but still a true Apple shape of being larger at the top & mid section. Those pants were a size 14W, but a wide leg.

Clients Christmas holiday Retro Celebrity Inspired party: December 2017

I say all of this to say, be careful with your words because they sting, especially with the journey I have been on.  Some of my weight loss was due to stress but the other factor after I noticed the weight loss was meeting with a Nutritionist.  She was my guide to get me in the right direction for healthy eating & lifestyle.
Also during this time, I was on my Invisalign journey which caused me to watch what I ate for 18 months. It was explained during my Invisalign consultation that my teeth are going to shift which may cause my facial shape to shift.   I had to wear my teeth straightening trays for 23 out of 24 hours a day.   So that meant if I went out to a steak restaurant I chose salmon salads over a steak.  It was less of a headache to be in the restaurant restroom brushing & flossing.  Trust me I have gotten some crazy looks being at a client lunch meeting, & women watching me brush & floss.  I got use to it however. LOL

So here I am in 2019, a size 14 (without the W), healthier and happy and not as stressed and creating the life that I desire...

Professional Style | 14 Things Stylish Women Do Everyday

Looking polished and confident doesn't always mean a complete wardrobe overhaul.  Sometimes its  also incorporating life changes, intentional planning + a few wardrobe tweaks to achieve an overall polished vibe.  Today I will share 14 things that stylish women do daily or weekly for a positive & cohesive flow.

1.  Dress for the weather

2.  Plan your outfit looks for the week on Sunday or at least the night before.

3.  Give yourself plenty of time to get ready in the morning.

4.  Select the right undergarments for your look.

5.  Dress for the occasion

6.  Wear clothes that fit and flatter your current body.

7.  Anchor looks with one expensive looking piece.  In most cases choose quality over quantity.

8.  Pick the right accessories for your look.

9.  Always dry clean your "Good Clothes" or investment pieces.

10.  After a long day, never lounge in your professional work clothes.  Get comfy after work.

11.  Follow other stylish women whether its celebrities or your favorite Instagram Influencer.  Creating a Pinterest board as a constant reminder of your style goals.

12.  Fold & hang up your clothes.  Don't just leave them sitting around in your bedroom or in piles in your closet.

13.  Be aware of when to wear heels and flats.  I personally keep a shoe basket in my car for quick changes or in my work satchel.

14.  Keep a fashion/style emergency kit on hand.  This includes: safety pins, band-aids, Tide pens or other stain remover wipes & fashion emergency tape.

Style + Beauty Tip - Remove Dark Underarm Hyperpigmentation

Style  + Beauty Tip • Summer is here & it’s beyond HOT  so that means for some wearing more sleeveless blouses & tanks. Taking care of the appearance of your under arms is important. Dark areas under the arms is a form of hyperpigmentation. It’s noticeable more in people of color but can affect anyone. This can sometimes make you feel uncomfortable showing your arms.

This can be caused by a number of reasons, whether it’s shaving, allergic reactions to the chemicals in certain deodorants which causes skin irritation. You can lighten up your underarms with a small mixture of the following:

1. Get a small bowl, glass or plastic.
2. A whole lemon, roll it around to gets the juice going.
3. Teaspoon of Tumeric.

4. Teaspoon of Baking Soda.
5. Bottle water or cup or water.
6. Add mixture in the bowl, stir & form a paste, similar to a mask consistency.
7. Rub paste under your arms & use the other half of the lemon as an exfoliant.
8. Let it sit for 15 minutes, rinse & you are done.
9. Repeat daily for a week & see the difference!

This can also work on other dark areas such as knees & elbows!

Stylist Tip | 5 Ways to Update Your Personal Style | Nashville Stylist

The summer is upon us and the days are getting longer, if you are anywhere close to Nashville you know that the weather has started out with some heat!  I want to share 5 ways to update your style for the new season.  Each season you should be updating your wardrobe as you are changing out your closet pieces.  Lets face it, we change & our body changes from year to year. Whether you have been on a weight loss journey or you have been consuming comfort food this Winter updating your closet with help to keep your look fresh.

Tip 1:  Go through your your entire closet.  Donate or sell items that you know will no longer work for your body and current style.  I actually do a combination of both, I cycle through my closet each season and donate to Goodwill.  I also have a sell better items on Poshmark.  If think of this as "Flipping your Closet" so that you can purchase new pieces from your sales or you could apply it to your home monthly budget.

Tip 2:  Remove items that no longer fit the way you want.  I firmly believe in having a tailor or seamstress on deck.  Most times this will help you maintain your clothing budget because a tailor can  sometimes be more affordable than buying a new wardrobe.  Also with this tip, your blazer fit matters, pay attention to the shoulder area.  Even though the over sized blazer is in this season, it should still fit you nicely.

3.  Less is More Simplify.  Now I will be transparent and say this one is tough for me, but I consider myself a "Ruthless Editor".  I don't mind donating and selling if I know that I will be bringing in new pieces. As a Stylist, I find myself buying something for myself if I am shopping for a Style Client.  This tip work well for people that are working on a minimalist journey and working toward a capsule wardrobe.

4.  Replace tanks and t-shirts every season.  I recommend that you replace your basics every season.  Whether long sleeve or short sleeve shirts.  This keeps them fresh and crisp, especially your white, black & heather grey shirts.  I would also add to the list black & khaki slacks that make start to show signs of wear. I love a good crew neck tee because it look good with just about anything, especially jeans, slacks, skirts or paired with a blazer.   My go to places to refresh my basics is Gap, Old Navy & Banana Republic.  I am also not opposed to Target's basics because they are good quality as well, for both men & women.

5.  Accessories Matter!  I am a firm believer in having current accessories.  My personal style is pretty classic overall, however I give it a boost with updated accessories especially during the Spring & Summer months.  You can really set off your look with a good statement necklace or earrings to create an entirely different look to the basic black suit or blouse and slacks.  Get creative!

Professional Spring Style Trend | Pastel Blazers | ALatriceStyle

A Spring Style Trend that I am loving is the pastel blazer.  Pastels just put you in the Spring/Summer Vibe & they can be worn in the office or for more casual looks.  Depending on your overall style, these blazers can be paired with slacks & skirts for the office or denim jeans for a casual look.

The key in wearing a blazer is selecting the one that best compliments your body type.  Blazer styles can be boxy, cinched waist, over sized, or the traditional style.  They can be accessorized with belts for more waist definition.

Are you loving the pastel blazer Spring Trend?
